What Should Students be Learning in This Century?
The learning skills required in this century are new and different abilities than were required many years ago. With new 21st century skills that students are educated with, we can sure that our economy will not be in jeopardy.
What the students had been learning ten years ago, should not be required today. Teaching a student how to email properly when he knows how to use instant messaging is something that makes your out of context. We are to adapt 21st century skills knowledge to a changing world.
The important skills that must be taught in schools today are critical thinking skills, and how to ask questions that require answers from several resources.
We should teach how to locate relevant accurate content instead of teaching content. If you are creating groups in your class just so that you can check on your teachers’ evaluation that you did it, then you are missing the point of doing it.
Groups are created so that our students will learn how to collaborate with others. And this is not only a classroom thing, but it should be done across the globe.
The future careers are still unknown to us. We do not know where they will be or their job description. Being a critical thinker, a problems solver with global awareness is what 21st century skills require.
We should let students use skills that help them understand the changing technology environment like social networking and contribution to the development of intellectual texts, each day.
We should engage our students in this adapting changing world. We should always be real. Today, using a math app, a student can solve a math problem in 2 seconds. In 5 minutes time, they can create a new essay from Google, and inform their friends in the next class the assignment you gave in the first period through text.
As educators, we should begin to understand this concept. This knowledge should be used and solve a bigger problem.
If you require a student to present the findings to a real world problem focusing on in class oral presenting skills, this cannot be downloaded from YouTube.
This oral presentation would require many skills from the students to prepare if this would be the basis of his assessment; o n how he analyzed the concept. In order to prepare for this oral presentation , he has to first to find relevant information on the topic and he should determine the credibility of the sources. The he writes and edits the script. He also need to chose and sue appropriate images.
What is implemented here are standards for reading, writing, and research, and the most difficult one is oral presentation.
We should refocus our priorities as educators. We should teach our children that which will prepare them for the future.
